Karl-Anthony Towns expressed surprise and disappointment after the New York Knicks announced they are pausing all contract extension negotiations until later in the 2026-27 season.
Karl-Anthony Towns voiced his frustration on Sunday after the New York Knicks announced they were tabling all contract extension talks with eligible players until later in the 2026-27 season. According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, the six-time All-Star called the decision a surprise, stating, “It was news to me. Very disappointed, to say the least.”
The Knicks issued a public statement late last week declaring a pause in negotiations with players eligible for extensions. The move appears to be a direct response to ongoing discussions with Towns, who admitted earlier this week that he was frustrated by the significant gap between his expectations and the team's offer following the Knicks' 2026 NBA championship run.
Financial details of the standoff have emerged, with reports indicating New York’s offer is in the range of four years and $200 million. Towns, who is earning $57.1 million in the current season and holds a $61 million player option for 2027-28, is eligible for a maximum extension projected at $276 million over four years. While Towns has indicated a willingness to accept less than the maximum, the two sides have yet to reach a compromise.
The Knicks' decision to halt talks is widely seen as an effort to avoid triggering the second apron of the luxury tax. To negotiate an in-season extension, Towns would need to decline his player option for the 2027-28 season, a move he said he had not seriously considered because he did not anticipate the negotiations dragging on this long.
Despite the public tension, Towns emphasized that the situation remains a business matter and that the team must focus on their on-court performance. “Let’s state the obvious: It’s a business, but there is business on the court for us to handle,” Towns said. The Knicks are expected to resume extension discussions later in the season, leaving the future of their star center in limbo for the time being.
