The Boston Celtics have secured guard Payton Pritchard through 2030 with a two-year, $44.2 million extension. The deal includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 season, following Pritchard's breakout 2025-26 campaign.
The Boston Celtics have officially agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension with guard Payton Pritchard, keeping the veteran point guard with the franchise through at least the 2029-30 season. According to CAA co-head of basketball Austin Brown and agent Max Saidman, the deal includes a mutual option for the final year, allowing either party to decide on the 2029-30 season. This move secures one of the team's most critical rotation pieces for the next several years, even after the Celtics traded Jaylen Brown this summer.
Pritchard, who is 28 years old, has emerged as a cornerstone of the Celtics' offense. Last season, he started 50 games and posted career highs in points (17.0), assists (5.2), and rebounds (3.9). His increased role was crucial in easing the impact of Jayson Tatum's absence for most of the 2025-26 season. Pritchard's touches per game rose significantly from 51.8 in 2024-25 to nearly 70 last season, marking the second-largest increase among players with high usage rates.
The financial structure of the extension is considered a strong value for Boston. Because Pritchard's current salary is relatively low at $7.8 million for the 2025-26 season, he was eligible to sign an extension based on 140 percent of the NBA's Estimated Average Player Salary. This mechanism allows the Celtics to lock him in for $21.2 million in 2028-29 and $22.9 million in 2029-30, which is below the standard max for a player of his production level.
Pritchard has been a durable and efficient performer since joining the league as the No. 26 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He has played 241 games over the last three years, tying for the third-most in the league during that span. His shooting prowess is also notable, as he is one of only four players in Celtics history to make at least 200 three-pointers in multiple seasons, joining Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Antoine Walker. With this extension, Pritchard is set to spend at least his ninth season in Boston, solidifying his status as a long-term leader for the team.
