UnitedHealth's wild ride inside DIA was not an accident or a manager's call. The weighting rule baked into the Dow determined exactly how much of your money followed the stock up and down, and most investors have never read that single line in the prospectus

On November 11, 2024, UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH | UNH Price Prediction) traded at $596.08. By May 30, 2025, it had fallen to $290.17, a 51.32% decline on a dividend-adjusted basis. From that bottom through October 15, 2026, the stock rose 40.64%. A delayed intraday quote on October 15, 2026, put it at $408.08, still below the November 2024 peak. If you own SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSEARCA:DIA), UnitedHealth’s share of your fund shrank and swelled along that entire path, driven solely by its share price.
Share Price Alone Sets Your Stake
State Street Global Advisors describes DIA’s benchmark as a price-weighted index of 30 component common stocks. Price-weighted means one simple rule: the higher a stock’s share price, the bigger its slice of the fund. Company size, earnings, and business quality play no role.
As UnitedHealth’s share price fell by half, its influence inside DIA fell with it. As the price climbed back, that influence returned automatically. The fund holds the most of a stock when it is most expensive and the least when it is cheapest. Those shifts come from the weighting rule alone.
The relationship above follows directly from the published weighting method.
