Once considered a long shot in the AI race, Anthropic has zoomed ahead of rival OpenAI on multiple fronts.
Anthropic now has higher run rate revenue, after reporting revenue of $16.8 billion for the third quarter at a recent investor update. The AI start-up is also on track to beat OpenAI to the public markets, as it's expected to go public in November, while OpenAI is now delaying its offering until 2027, choosing instead to raise more money privately.
Anthropic is also profitable on an adjusted basis, while OpenAI is deeply in the red. Given its success, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has emerged as a top leader in AI, and he famously predicted that the technology would exceed human capacity at most everything by 2027 or 2028.
How close are we to AGI?
Artificial general intelligence refers to the ability of machines to perform intellectual functions and solve problems as well or better than humans.
Whether we've reached AGI depends on who you ask. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said back in March of this year that AGI had already arrived, saying on a podcast that an AI agent could independently build and run a billion-dollar company. Huang reiterated that assessment in September, saying that "AGI had arrived" with the launch of Open-AI's GPT-6 Astra, which was built on more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs.
Astra recently solved 10 long-standing problems in math and computer science, demonstrating the power of the technology and suggesting that Amodei's prediction may already have come true.
Not every tech titan shares Huang's synopsis. Elon Musk believed his company, Space Exploration Technologies, would reach AGI with its next model, Grok 5, due out next year. OpenAI's Sam Altman also didn't agree with Huang's assessment, saying that he thought his company was almost there and expected to reach AGI by the end of the year.
