Semiconductor shares recovered on Monday following a sharp weekly decline. Investors are positioning ahead of major tech earnings from Tesla, Netflix, and Meta.
U.S. semiconductor stocks rebounded on Monday, reversing a significant portion of the losses sustained during the previous week. The recovery came as investors adjusted their positions ahead of the critical third-quarter earnings season, which includes upcoming reports from tech heavyweights Tesla, Netflix, and Meta Platforms. These reports are expected to provide an early indication of broader business momentum in the technology sector.
According to Stocktwits, Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares each rose approximately 2.6% in overnight trading late on Sunday. Memory-focused stocks also saw gains, with Micron (MU) advancing 1.8% and SanDisk (SNDK) rising 2.6%. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) climbed 2.4%, attempting to recover from an 11.8% weekly decline that marked its worst performance since March.
The sector's volatility has been influenced by global market dynamics, including movements in South Korea’s KOSPI index, which was up 1% on Monday. Analysts note that the KOSPI and U.S. chip stocks often move in tandem, with shifts in one frequently influencing the other. This correlation underscores the interconnected nature of the global semiconductor supply chain.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan provided a positive update on the company’s operational progress, stating that the firm is 80% through its restructuring efforts. Tan highlighted AI chip packaging and Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) as key potential growth drivers for the company. These strategic focuses align with the broader industry shift toward specialized hardware for artificial intelligence workloads.
The recent selloff has been part of a broader market correction, with some analysts noting that a small number of stocks have driven a disproportionate amount of index gains since late March. As the market braces for the next wave of earnings, the resilience of chipmakers will be a key indicator of investor confidence in the tech sector's long-term outlook.
